On the 1st day of spring our garlic sprouts broke ground! Today we burned off the old Asparagus residue and power tilled between the rows. No frost down 5-6”, below that there is still frost. We are still about 2 weeks behind normal. This year we will put plastic row covers over 4 rows to warm them, and speed our Asparagus emergence for our farm event on the 25th of April… hopefully we will have tastings of creamed asparagus soup, but we will have lamb stew, and taste fresh garden greens and maybe Irish soda bread We had a good CSA week with new shareholders and some renewals. We hope to have our 2014 shares filled by the end of April… we’ve got a ways to go!
Next week we will go to Baker Minnesota to get our Certified seed potatoes. We will double our potato acres this year with 70% Reds, and 30%Whites. Potatoes and Onions will be first to plant, then leeks, followed by Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage and Kohlrabi. We will be doing a “Pollinator Planting” and soil building cover crops as well. We certified our planned planting acres for 2014 with the FSA last week; we plan to grow about 10 acres of fresh produce for our Community shareholders 1st, then for our retail sales. We hope the latter will expand
The fresh garden greens are doing well in the greenhouse, on a 40 degree bright sunny day it will be a hot humid 90 degrees in the Hy-Tunnel, the greens love it. Watch for an article in the “Volante” next week. Call if you need more brochures for friends and family. We need a warm and wet “April for our May Flowers” and other produce
Ps check out our new signs on highway 50 bypass. X norbeck St.
Sincerely, Sam and Heidi
