Dear friends and shareholders,
The wedding was wonderful at Parker! Thank you for your understanding last Saturday… The seasons are changing… fall tillage is underway. Soil building cover crops are up, and doing well, fall broccoli is about a month away from harvest, and new certified garlic varieties will be planted next week! This Saturday is both Dakota days and Hobo days! We will be in the Dakota Days parade… Maybe Hobo days next year…? As an SDSU Ag grad, I am a jacks fan as well… So watch for us in the parade and then come to the farm after the parade for your CSA share. This week we will have: All the tomatoes you want and more… We have a huge crop! (So send your friends),and a big crop of Certified Tennessee sweet potatoes (Lofton thinks Covingtons are the best variety), lots of kale and chard, new parsnips, new lettuce, spinach, arugula, and radish from the greenhouse, melons, squash, and pumpkins. We also have a big crop of red top turnips if anyone is interested for us to dig for you. Lots of hot peppers, and some sweet peppers, a few red cabbage left, and lots of brussel sprouts. Also a nice selection of ornamental October sunflowers, and lots of nice herbs: basil, rosemary, sage, spearmint, stevia, English thyme and more. We now have a team of 4 USD MBA grad students that have selected our farm as a marketing class project for this semester. We have set our CSA goal of 150 personal shares and 25 commercial shares for 2014. That is what it will take to pay for our new well and irrigation system on 7-8 ac of “fresh local produce” for you and your family. Your share is good for 1 year. With the greenhouse you can expect fresh Heikes farm produce for 8 out of the next 12 months.
So… we do need to grow some more! We hope you will renew your share when your years up. We hope to see you at the USD Dakota day’s parade, and then out at the Heikes farm after the parade. We are praying for rain, but we do hope the weather is okay for the folks on Saturday. If you are not sure when you share is up for renewal check with us and we can let you know.
See you then,
Sincerely, Sam and Heidi
