Dear friends and shareholders,
The well pump and motor are wired! We are now flood irrigating from a tank trailer… just in time! Yesterday I went to Southern Nebraska and got a small water reel, for sprinkler irrigation as soon as we lay pipe to the fields. Thank you all for your prayers and support for our community supported agriculture, fresh local food production. It looks like we will have enough produce to sell some retail off the farm as well.
Gail (one of our employees wrote most of this weeks farm update…We are in full production of Zucchini (several varieties), yellow squash (crookneck, straight neck, and it seems like we planted something else too). We will get back to you on that last variety. The green beans are beautiful and blemish free. Our Ambrosia sweet corn a variety with a very high sugar content is almost ready to pick. Maybe some on
Saturday… and more next week. Depends on heat … the cool has slowed it. We have 11 varieties of tomatoes
We have a new crop of curley kale for you, some of those red rounded, red-vined kale leaves that are so popular with kale chip makers, and a fancy leafed kale with red veins. Kale is super nutritious! We found a nice big carrot yesterday, there are lots more now. We have Nantes and Chardonnay varieties just waiting to be picked for you Saturday. We would be willing to supply you with some Squash blossoms to stuff for a taste treat. Of course, we will have lots Detroit Beets, the sweetest I have ever tasted. So sweet that when I added vinegar and butter after cooking and let them sit a while they made a thick sauce. We also have lots of purple top turnips just waiting to be roasted with equal amounts of honey and balsamic vinegar.
We also have Red and White potatoes, and also just let us have notice of the quantity you need to buy above your share. So, let’s try roasting those tubers on the grill or in the oven. You are in for a real treat with veggies fresh from the garden to the table from Heikes family Farms this week.
